About Wanda Barnett

In 2010, Wanda Barnett joins the new Torch & Twang show on Thursday nights as a featured fiddler and singer. When she steps up to the microphone at center stage, you are sure to love her lively performance.

Wanda is no stranger to Renfro Valley. In 1982 founder John Lair hired her as a fiddler for the New Coon Creek Girls. She spent 10 years playing with the all-girl group, first on the Renfro Vally Barn Dance and later on Bluegrass festival circuit.

With the Coon Creek Girls, Wanda made several appearances on the Grand Ol' Opry, toured the Eastern half of the United States, parts of Canada, performed on a Bahamian cruise and recorded 5 albums.

Born in Harlan County, Kentucky, Wanda was raised in Southern Indiana. As as young child, Wanda studied piano and violin. In high school, Wanda's brother gave her a guitar adn from that moment on, "I found myself and was hooked on singing, songwriting and folk music." she said.

Wanda says "Probably the most important aspect of my life and music is teaching private music lessons to approximately 40 kids from ages 4 to 70. It is my calling, my life's work, what I do for God. Hopefully, I make a bit of difference in my corner of the world."

Wanda teaches Classical, Old-Time fiddle, Gospel, and just Old-Time music in general, as well as some modern praise and worship music. She wants to help preserve and keep the Old-Time music alive, and says it also gives the kids exposure to music with a positive message.

"I love being back at Renfro Valley." Wanda said. "I have so many memories of so many people here who are now gone on, of so many songs, of Mr. Lair, Coy Priddy, The Baker Brothers, dear Jim Gaskin and Bee Lucas playing twin fiddles, the New Coon Creek Girls, and wonderful Ole Joe Clark always calling me (and every other girl, I bet!) Purdy."

Wanda currently resides in Richmond, Kentucky with her 3 rescued cats (Jazzy, Trudy & Louie "the Tank") a Sain Bernard (Molly) and a Great Pyrenees (Buddy).
