John has studied composition and received a Masters in composition at the
University of Kentucky under American composer Joseph Baber, who in turn,
studied with Howard Hanson and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. John's original and
yet unpublished work for solo guitar "Variations and Fantasia on a Theme by John
Dowland" won the Toronto "Guitar 87" Quest For New Music Procan award in 1987.
Johns setting of "Four Shakespeare Songs" won the Kentucky Oswald Competition in
the early 80's.
John Hedger has studied guitar & lute in master classes and private lessons
with Manuel Barrueco, Paul O'Dette, Narciso Yepes, Nigel North, Elliot Fisk,
Eduardo Fernandez, George Sakellariou, David Russell, David Kelsey, Michael
Fogler, and others.
John plays finely handcrafted guitars by Thomas Rein (St. Louis, MO)... His
lutes include a 7- course tenor lute by British luthier Reid Galbraith, and a
smaller 6-course alto lute by Dan Larson and a 7-course lute by Thomas Rein.
John Hedger has been actively performing classical guitar and renaissance lute
